CINEMANILA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
presents
“ALYANA-A STUDY OF AUTISM IN THE PHILIPPINES”
The First Local Feature-length Digital Film Documentary About Autism
The CineManila International Film Festival (CIFF) is a yearly event which showcases over 75 films from 40 different countries since 1999. It’s 8th annual festival opened last November 3 and shall run up to November 15, 2006. Film screenings are being held at SM Cinemas, Greenbelt Theaters and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Auditorium. ALYANA—A Study of Autism in the Philippines, was seen by the CIFF Founder/Director Tikoy Aguiluz during its premiere screening at the UP Film Center last July and consequently invited to participate in this year’s CineManila International Film Festival.
The film traces the history of autism in the Philippines, dating back to the 1970s when awareness on the disability was remote and unreachable. It also depicts the plight and struggle of persons with autism including their families and those involved in their lives. It gives information about autism, its’ possible causes, symptoms, implications and the importance of appropriate intervention. It also presents different accounts of experts in the field of medical profession, special education and other related institutions such as schools and special services as well as perspectives from both the private and public sector. The movie was directed by an independent film maker Miranamedina, a UP Film Center scholar at the Film and Television Institute, Pune, India. Produced by Miryad Cuts and Wacky O Production in collaboration with PAGCOR, Lingap-Pangarap Foundation, Inc. and NCCA.
